Single Service Members Find Flavor and Fun at USO "Let's Cook" Teaching Kitchen

The USO Center on Fort Eustis came alive with the aroma of fresh ingredients and the laughter of single service members who live in the barracks as they gathered for a special cooking class, part of the “Let’s Cook Teaching Kitchen” series, Jan. 18, 2025. Sponsored by a $50,000 donation from Food Lion Feeds, the event marked the program’s first installment, bringing service members together to learn practical cooking skills, while fostering a sense of community and connection.

The hands-on culinary class offered participants a chance to create nutritious meals while learning about meal prepping, cooking techniques, and healthy eating habits. With guidance from culinary professionals and Food Lion employee volunteers, attendees explored ways to prepare budget-friendly dishes using simple ingredients.

“This was definitely a learning experience that we can use later in life,” said PFC Johnson, reflecting on the lessons he gained during the event.

For Lance Corporal Locken, the partnership between the USO and Food Lion stood out. “It’s cool Food Lion wanted to help the USO give us this opportunity,” he said, emphasizing the value of such initiatives in supporting military families.

Specialist Sahibzada also found joy in the shared experience. “This was a fun way for us to cook together as a family outside of our home,” she shared, adding that the event created lasting memories.

The class also resonated with Lance Corporal Gonzalez, who appreciated the practical benefits. “Thanks to the USO and Food Lion for doing classes like this so we can start meal prepping better in our barracks. I’m excited to come back next month and make something new,” he said.

The “Let’s Cook Teaching Kitchen” series is designed to strengthen the well-being of military service members and their families by promoting wellness, culinary education, and community connection. Food Lion’s generous support underscores their commitment to providing nutritional education.

Nikki Jones, the Center Operations Specialist at the USO Center on Fort Eustis, expressed gratitude for the event’s success. “This class wasn’t just about cooking, it was about creating bonds, building skills, and supporting our military community. Seeing these young service members come together and leave with smiles and new knowledge was truly heartwarming,” she said.

The monthly cooking series aims to create a lasting impact on the military community in Southern Virginia, empowering them with skills that transcend the kitchen.
