Volunteering with the USO
There are countless ways volunteers support the USO, but they are all unified in their dedication to our service members and their families. Whether it’s helping at a special event, greeting and cheering at homecomings, working the front desk or providing a listening ear, our volunteers are the reason service members know they can count on the USO. Airport volunteers provide an invaluable service to our military travelers passing through our airports. Volunteers assist travelers by providing information and directions, by greeting guests, checking military IDs, working the snack bar and assisting guests with airport information, flight information, ground transportation, and photocopying and faxing. Volunteers also play an important role in helping guests with travel delays and dilemmas. Permanent shift volunteers are utilized at each airport location. This volunteer opportunity is ideal for someone who can make a monthly commitment of four to five hours. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer at USO lounges.
USO Center Volunteers staff nine USO centers located in military communities at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Fort Belvoir, Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Fort Meade, two locations at Quantico, Fort Eustis, Langley AFB, and Norfolk. The USO centers offer a wide variety of programs geared toward active duty military and their families. These programs include play groups, holiday programs, spouse groups, job skills workshops, movie nights, bingo, and game nights. Permanent volunteers who can commit to two shifts (3-5 hours each) per month are utilized at each location. Volunteers will have an opportunity to assist with center programming but are also expected to greet guests, check military IDs, replenish snacks and coffee, and assist guests with general information.
Event Volunteers assist the programs and services division in providing a myriad of human service programs for all service members, with a focus on young enlisted families, single service members, military children and military spouses. Throughout the year hundreds of special events are planned and executed with the intent of elevating morale, building a sense of community and helping to ease the burdens of a transient military lifestyle. Episodic volunteers are needed throughout the year to help with these events. Volunteer duties typically include set-up, signing-in guests, helping with crafts & various activities, and clean-up.
Specialized Volunteers are welcome, too! If you have a special talent that you are willing to share, we can find a place for you! We are always in need of volunteers that can take photographs, serve as exercise instructors, entertain children, present a workshop on a special topic or act as a translator. Sharing your personal talent can be an ongoing opportunity or a one time commitment.
