USO-Metro Dulles Volunteers Support D-Day Veterans Traveling for 75th Anniversary Events

Volunteers of Washington Dulles International USO Airport Lounge had the distinct honor to roll out the red, white and blue carpet for more than 20 WWII veterans transiting to Normandy, France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day events. Starting on Friday, May 31, USO-Metro volunteers welcomed the WWII veterans with American flags, red poppies and a chorus of patriotic cheers and applause from nearby passengers.

“The joy and surprise on the faces of the WWII veterans when they saw our USO volunteers indicates that these small acts of appreciation mean a great deal to them,” stated Andrea Tassan, Center Supervisor of the Dulles USO Airport Lounge. “It’s such an incredible honor for our volunteers, who truly represent the support of the American people, to have the opportunity to personally thank them for their heroic service to our nation.”

On Monday, June 3rd, three of the WWII veterans, Clifford Stump, 94, Gordon D. Monson, 91 and Harry Miller, 91 had lunch and shared war stories with several Northern Virginia High School students. The lunch was hosted by United Airlines and organized by the 82nd Airborne Association. USO-Metro provided volunteers to help set-up and serve lunch after greeting veterans at their gates.

As a token of appreciation, the WWII veterans presented the USO Dulles Airport Lounge volunteers with a challenge coin commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Titled “Jumping Into History 2019,” the coin portrays images from Operation Market Garden and Battle of the Bulge. The one of kind coin joins the 100 plus military challenge coins on display at the USO Dulles Airport Lounge.

Assisting military travelers is a big part of the services provided by USO Airport volunteers to help strengthen America’s military service members by keeping the connected to family, home and country. Services include gate greetings and send offs, expedited movement through security checkpoint and connecting gates and support for Families of the Fallen.
