'They Call Me Macgyver in the Kitchen': Volunteer Whips Up Homemade Dinners at USO Warrior and Family Center at Bethesda
Known around the center for making a meal out of just about anything, this volunteer’s special, home-cooked meals make walking into the USO Warrior and Family Center at Bethesda feel — and taste — like home.
“It’s usually found items, which to me is kind of fun,” said Susan Bachenheimer. “Like this bread pudding — depending on what we have leftover, I just kind of make it up.”
Bachenheimer began the home-cooked meal program at the center four years ago and has given nearly one thousand hours of service to the USO Warrior and Family Center at Bethesda.
“When you see that you’ve done or provided something to a service member that doesn’t have a home-cooked meal, that to me means giving them a little piece of home,” Bachenheimer said, “which is what I think the USO is all about.”
